Hebrew Language Academy ("HLA") is a diverse public charter school that teaches Modern Hebrew to children of all backgrounds and prepares them to be successful global citizens. Opened in 2009 in Brooklyn's Community School District 22, HLA is the founding school in the Hebrew Public network of schools. The school serves nearly 700 students in grades K-8 and has been recognized as a "Reward School" by the New York State Department of Education for its students' academic growth. The school offers an academically rigorous curriculum, including daily Modern Hebrew studies that lead to a high level of language fluency. HLA is housed in a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly building with a large gym/auditorium, a full-sized cafeteria, music rooms, spacious, well-lit classrooms, and dedicated outdoor playground space. The outdoor areas give students room for safe play and movement and are used for recess and community events. "Global citizenship" education is a big part of the school's focus. It includes the development of student skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, with an emphasis on empathy and emotional intelligence. We serve students from all backgrounds, including a high percentage of students with special needs and a growing number of students who are English language learners. HLA is a member of the Coalition of Diverse Charter Schools. We are strong believers in personalized learning-ensuring that each child has the opportunity to grow academically and socially tailored to their needs and learning styles. Our personalized approach is enhanced by small student-to-teacher ratios, transforming classrooms into genuine communities and supporting positive social-emotional development for every child.
